The Atlantic Economic Council is undertaking a two-year research project that will examine our health and health care system from an economic perspective.
There is an increasingly significant relationship between our health, our health care system and the economy. Our health, and the state of our health care system, are now an important determinant of our current and future economic prosperity.
Structural challenges exist in our health care system that spill over into employee health and productivity:
How do we ensure we have a healthy economy, a healthy workforce and population, and an efficient, effective and sustainable health care system ?
Where do we need to innovate?
What is the appropriate role for technology?
Do we need to re-examine how and who delivers health care?
What can we learn from other jurisdictions, internationally and across Canada?
What lessons and solutions can we share with others? This is the focus of our new research series.
Overview of Health Care Performance in Atlantic Canada
Our goals for this research series are to:
Raise awareness and increase the understanding of the important economic role of the health care sector and why good health and a sustainable health care system are vital for economic prosperity.
Bring data, information and a fact-based understanding of our health and health care system to support informed decision-making, building consensus on the current state of our health and health care system.
Contribute to informing public debate and decision-making to ensure health care discussions consider relevant economic perspectives and focus on long-term sustainable solutions.
Identify practical levers and innovations for governments such as regulatory changes, funding structures, and workforce strategies.
With our specific focus on Atlantic Canada, we will also consider how the four provinces can work together to build a stronger and sustainable health care system in the region.
