Summer Research Assistant (Remote/Hybrid)

The Atlantic Economic Council is dedicated to fostering a healthy, inclusive and sustainable Atlantic Canadian economy. As the region's premier independent economic research organization, we are at the forefront of analyzing critical issues affecting our economy. Recent topics include the health care, productivity, immigration and Indigenous economic reconciliation. 

We are seeking a dynamic individual to fill a summer research assistant position. If you are passionate about economic policy and want to make a positive impact on issues affecting our region, we want to hear from you. The successful candidate will support our ongoing research on health and productivity, along with other priority projects.

This position is a remote or hybrid opportunity. Staff are in the office two days a week, which is located in downtown Halifax. The chosen candidate must have access to a reliable personal computer, internet and the ability to videoconference.


The Role

  • Research. Collect data from Statistics Canada and other reliable sources. Synthesize information from research reports and government documents. 
  • Analysis. Assist senior staff in analyzing economic data. Produce graphs, tables and write-ups that highlight key trends in the data.

  

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong data analysis skills 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Time management capabilities
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills

Assets: experience conducting research, knowledge of the Atlantic Canadian economy, English/French bilingualism.


Eligibility

Candidates must fulfill the following criteria, which are based on the Canada Summer Jobs program. Please note that this position is conditional on receiving funding through the program. Confirm in your cover letter that you meet these requirements.

  • 15 to 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee for the duration of employment
  • Valid Social Insurance Number and legally entitled to work in Canada
 

Terms of the Contract

  • 35 hours/week for 13-14 weeks
  • Work hours are 8:30am - 4:30pm (Atlantic time)
  • Start date is May 19, 2026
  • Wage rate is $23/hour
