Lana AsaffLana Asaff
Senior Economist | Atlantic Economic Council

Lana is a Senior Economist at the Atlantic Economic Council. She contributes to regular analysis on the region’s economy and is leading the Council’s work on the transition to net-zero emissions.

Previously, she held positions with the provincial government at the Nova Scotia Department of Finance and Treasury Board, as well as with the federal government at Finance Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency.

Lana is President of the Atlantic Association of Applied Economists. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Economics from Saint Mary’s University and a Master of Arts in Economics from Queen’s University.

Douglas Porter has over 30 years of experience analyzing global economies and financial markets. As Chief Economist at BMO Financial Group and author of the popular Talking Points, he oversees the macroeconomic and financial market forecasts and co-writes the firm’s weekly flagship publication, Focus. Mr. Porter manages the team that has won numerous forecasting awards.

Most recently, Douglas led the team to a #1 ranking for Top U.S. Forecaster among 60 global firms in the 2023 Focus Economics Survey, and #1 for Top Canadian Inflation Forecaster among 28 firms. Also, his team took the #1 spot in the StarMine Awards for Most Accurate Forecasters for Canada in 2022.


Dawn DesjardinsDawn Desjardins

Dawn Desjardins is an economist and executive with experience in researching economic and policy issues. Over her career she has communicated complex issues to clients, decision-makers and media audiences. She was RBC’s Deputy Chief Economist, a reporter for Bloomberg Financial News in Canada and a bond strategist at JP Morgan Canada.

At RBC, Dawn managed a team of economists who were responsible for the economic and financial market forecasts for Canada and the US. A passionate advocate of women’s labour market engagement, in recent years, Dawn used her research to start conversations, drive policy discussions and effect change.

Fred is a Senior Policy Analyst at the Atlantic Economic Council. He has been the Council's lead on economic impact analysis and Indigenous economic research since 2009. Fred is responsible for monitoring the New Brunswick economy. He sits on the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce Policy Advisory Committee for Nova Scotia. Prior to joining the Atlantic Economic Council, he was the Director of the Economics and Statistics Division at the Nova Scotia Department of Finance.

Fred is a Chartered Professional Accountant. He has a Master of Business Administration from Dalhousie University, a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Guelph, and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Saint Francis Xavier University.

Saeed El-Darahali, MBA, BSc, CHR, is the President and CEO of SimplyCast, a leading provider of self-service, multi-channel marketing services empowering small businesses to create, manage and track their own online and offline marketing campaigns.

He is the driving force behind SimplyCast’s all-in-one marketing solution, which has grown to serve clients in over 175 countries. Saeed is a popular speaker at conferences, including NAWeb, CABI, the 7th World Congress of e-Business, Enterprise Atlantic and ARCN. A part-time lecturer at Saint Mary’s University, he has taught advanced computer information systems, System Analysis and Design.

Saeed brings over 15 years of management experience, and a strong interest in strategic partnerships, corporate financing, strategic growth, operations, and sales and marketing management to his business and the IT industry. He holds a Masters of Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Certificate of Human Resource Management and Minor in Economics, from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He enjoys sharing his experiences in growing a business from the ground up with start-up companies.

Stephane TurbideStephane Turbide

Stephane earned his BSc. in Mechanical Engineering at the Royal Military College Kingston in 1993.  He was then commissioned as an Officer of the Canadian Armed Forces, joining the Communication Command HQ in Ottawa, Ontario. In 1995, Stephane left the CAF to join Tembec, a major pulp & paper company in Temiscaming, to serve in different growing leadership roles in manufacturing. Stephane moved to Ottawa in 1998 to take responsibility of Iogen’s industrial enzyme manufacturing operations (biotechnology).  He also participated in commissioning the world’s first demonstration of a full-scale residual-to-ethanol production with novel technologies.

In 2001, Stephane joined ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel company, to oversee different manufacturing plants in Contrecoeur, Quebec.  In 2007, he was promoted to Division Manager, Rod Manufacturing, and in 2010, to Division Manager, Steelmaking / Continuous Casting. Stephane successfully completed his Executive MBA from McGill-HEC, Montreal, in 2011. In early 2012, Stephane joined Pratt & Whitney Canada in a manufacturing leadership role in the Engine Center and was quickly appointed General Manager of Halifax Operations in Nova Scotia.  He is currently overseeing important investments and technology upgrades for PWC’s Halifax Operations to supply high-end critical parts to existing & next generation engines.  Current manufacturing transformation to date has attracted several important recognitions.

In 2014, Stephane joined the Advisory Board of Directors of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) in Nova Scotia, to which he was selected to the Chair position since 2021. Stephane is a registered professional engineer (OIQ).  He has over 30 years of project, operational and manufacturing experience in various leadership roles, up to general management positions for the past 16 years including international exposure.

Christina holds a Master of Environmental Legal Studies from the University of Auckland and a Bachelor of International Relations from Mount Allison University. She has played a key role in shaping provincial strategies, including the Building Resilience: PEI Climate Adaptation Plan, Living Lab, Prince Edward Island, and program reviews in education, health, and energy. Her work extends to organizations like Holland College, helping them clarify their purpose and create effective strategic plans.

Carey Bonnell’s career in the seafood industry spans almost 25 years, including roles such as Managing Director of the Canadian Center for Fisheries Innovation, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister of the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Environment, and 8 years as the Head of School of Fisheries at the Marine Institute, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. In February 2018, Carey joined Ocean Choice International where he is Vice President of Sustainability and Engagement. 

As the Vice President of Sustainability and Engagement, Carey leads Ocean Choices sustainability commitments, including the company's Marine Stewardship Council certifications and Fishery Improvement Projects. Carey is also heavily involved with driving technology and innovation improvements across Ocean Choice’s operations to improve the company's environmental footprint and sustainability commitments. Additionally, Carey also leads Ocean Choice’s government and stakeholder engagement initiatives and represents Ocean Choice on industry associations. 

Carey has also served as Industry Co-Chair of the Canadian Seafood Value Chain Roundtable, a board member of the Canadian Center for Fisheries Innovation, Past-Chair of the Fisheries Council of Canada and Past President of the International Association of Seafood Professionals.

Patrick is the Senior Researcher and Director of Major Projects for the Atlantic Economic Council. He has been active in economic and business analysis for over 25 years. Patrick is a leading voice on the issues impacting the economy of Atlantic Canada. He recently directed several reports on the labour skills challenge in Atlantic Canada and the latest edition of the Council's Major Projects Inventory which analyses capital investment trends in the region.

Tore M. Løseth

Tore M. Løseth brings over 20 years of experience at Equinor to his current role as Country Manager for Equinor Canada. Tore began his career as a geologist after graduating from the University of Bergen with a Ph.D. in Sedimentology and has held several management positions at Equinor, including Vice President and Senior Vice Presidents roles for Exploration in the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and Equinor’s international onshore activities.

In 2020, Tore served as acting Executive Vice President for Exploration and member of the Corporate Executive Committee. Most recently, Tore held the position of Country Manager for Russia and Senior Vice President Exploration and Production for Russia and Azerbaijan, prior to Equinor’s exit of our Russian Business activities in 2022.
